Description. Colour: Body fuscous ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–4 ); scape, eye, profemur and posterior lobe of pronotum brown; rest of antennae, rest of legs and labium yellowish-brown except yellow basal half of pedicel (distiflagellum variable from yellow to dark brown). Posterior lobe of pronotum in a few specimens with two oval spots slightly paler yellowish than ground colour, directed from humeral angles to midpoint of anterior lobe, seldom narrow midline and humeral angles slightly paler as well. Clavus pale except small spot at apex of scutellum; corium brown with basal one-third and a small spot at three-fourth length of exocorium (in most cases contrasting) creamy, on some specimens a subapical spot on vein Cu and exocorium at halfway dark brown.Apex of metafemora slightly darkened. Membrane distad of apex of corium with a creamy, medially brown spot with pale centre, being connected with brown posterior half, here veins and apex pale.
Structure. Body oblong, dull, antennae, legs, metepimeron and abdomen subshiny; with hardly visible, fine, decumbent pubescence (best visible on antennae, legs and abdomen).
Eyes relatively large, interocular distance about 2 times wider than eye and more than 2.0 times longer than antenniferous tubercle. Antennae rather long, basiflagellum cylindrical, not thickened apically. Pronotum strongly narrowing anteriad, posterior margin only exceptionally less than 2.35 times wider than anterior one.
Ostiolar peritreme of male long, directed first almost laterad, then curving posteriad, then turned towards metacoxa, ending close to posterior margin of metepisternum; evaporatorium large, covering nearly two-third of metepisternum (Fig.12). On some male specimens peritreme shorter, not or only slightly curving towards metacoxae.
Measurements (holotype male, followed by ranges of 6 males and 7 females): Total body length: 3.85, 3.70– 4.63; head: length 0.56, 0.56–0.69, width 0.69, 0.66–0.74, interocular distance 0.35, 0.34–0.39, eye length 0.21, 0.21–0.26, length of antenniferous tubercle 0.10, 0.10–0.13; length of antennomeres: I 0.44, 0.44–0.59, II 0.73, 0.73–0.95, III 0.59, 0.63–0.78, IV 0.56, 0.59–0.64, diameter of basiflagellum 0.08, 0.09–0.11; pronotum: length 0.84, 0.76–0.99, maximum width 1.15, 1.10–1.31, width at transversal furrow 0.83, 0.78–0.94, width at anterior margin 0.45, 0.48–0.53; scutellum: length 0.71, 0.69–0.84, width 0.64, 0.60–0.76; length of claval commissure 0.37, 0.31–0.41.
Relative measurements: Table 3 View TABLE 3 . Compared with other species, the pronotum total width: width at anterior margin ratio is particularly significant, but none of these ratios are extreme within the genus.
Diagnosis. M. horvathi sp. nov. is different from M. forticornis in the much slenderer antenna and body (especially anterior lobe of the pronotum); larger eye, slenderer profemur with larger straight tooth and paler coloration.Among the newly described Malipatilius species, M. horvathi sp. nov. has either shorter antenniferous tubercle (eye is at least 2 times longer) or its pronotum more strongly narrowing anteriad (width at posterior margin at least 2.31 times larger than at anterior margin).
Etymology. The new species is named after Géza Horváth (1847–1937), outstanding Hungarian entomologist who described 1494 Hemiptera species and varieties, among them 204 valid Lygaeoidea species, 20 of them are living in New Guinea.
Distribution. M. horvathi sp. nov. is the most widely distributed Papuan species of Malipatilius , known mostly from the mountainous areas of Papua New Guinea ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ).
