22. Maekistocera Wiedemann, 1821c: 41 View in CoL .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Nematocera fuscana Wiedemann, 1820 ; Tipula filipes Fabricius, 1805 (as “ Maekistocera filipes mihi”).
TYPE SPECIES: Tipula filipes Fabricius, 1805 , by subsequent designation [ Macquart, 1838: 59 (63)] .
CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus ( teste this work; see REMARKS under Megistocera below).
FAMILY: TIPULIDAE .
REMARKS: There are two original spellings of this genus-group name in Wiedemann (1821c): Maekistocera and Mackistocera (both on page 41). Acting as First Reviser, Maekistocera is here selected as the correct original spelling. Wiedemann (1828: 55) used the spelling Megistocera for the same generic concept, which as been used by virtually all subsequent workers but cannot be adopted through prevailing usage (ICZN Code Article 33.3.1; see REMARKS under Megistocera below).
EMENDATIONS: Moegistocera Macquart, 1834: 509 (unjustified).
[ Megistocera ] Wiedemann in Meigen, 1826: vi [ Wiedemann, 1828: 55].
CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Maekistocera Wiedemann, 1821 View in CoL .
FAMILY: TIPULIDAE .
REMARKS: Criteria to make this name available as an emendation were not found to be fulfilled in this work. Although most recent works use this spelling for the genus, it is not available through prevailing usage (ICZN Code Article 33.3.1) because attributions by subsequent authors are not back to the original spelling in Wiedemann (1821c) as required by the Article, but instead refer to the incorrect subsequent spelling in Wiedemann (1828).
