Range: —Greater Antilles; Central America; Andes from Venezuela south to Bolivia (CO, LP); Venezuelan and Brazilian Roraima Formation.

Ecology: —Common; terrestrial in open humid montane forests and grasslands; 2000–3600 m.

Notes: —This species is variable with respect to leaf length, leaf width, and direction. The total range indicated above includes local forms or varieties that have been described under other species names ( P. mexicanus (Herter) B.Øllg. , Huperzia montana (Underw. & F.E.Lloyd) Holub ).
