Type-material. Stein described this species from 3♂ from Brisbane and 1♀ from Botany Bay, from material in HNHM. The 3♂, collected in 1900 by L. Biró, were studied by me in HNHM in 1986 (Pont & Werner, 2006: 18; Pont, 2013: 53), having survived the destruction of the HNHM Calyptrate Diptera View in CoL collections in 1956; the Botany Bay ♀ has not been found ( Pont, 2013). The three ♂ syntypes are slightly mouldy, and two have the head missing. The ♂ with the head is herewith designated as lectotype, and the other 2♂ are paralectotypes. Each of the three has two printed labels: “ Australia / Biró” and “ Queensland / Brisbane”. In addition, the lectotype has Stein’s handwritten label on pale green paper “ Lispa / albimaculata / sp.n.”. Apart from the mould, it is in good condition. All three specimens belong to Lispe albimaculata as here defined.
Diagnosis. This is the only Australian species with a dark band in apical part of wing. The ♂ may also be easily recognised by the large boss-like tubercle on sternite 3 ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 28–33 ).

Proepimeral seta absent, this area with 2-4 tiny setulae. Anepisternum with 1 short seta in upper anterior corner; posterior row with 1 strong and 2 weak setae. 3 kepst, lower one closer to posterior than to anterior one, only the posterior one strong ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 28–33 ). Legs. Fore coxa yellow, mid and hind coxae mainly black; trochanters yellow; femora black, extreme tips (knees) yellow, mid femur yellow on apical 1/4 to 1/5; ♂ tibiae yellow, fore tibia partly infuscated; ♀ fore tibia mainly dark, mid and hind tibiae yellow but partly infuscated; basal 1–2 tarsomeres yellow in ♂, weakly so in ♀, otherwise tarsomeres black. Fore coxa bare behind. Fore femur without av setae; pv surface with 3–4 short setae in apical half and 1 fine seta at base; pd row complete, short. Fore tibia without submedian setae; with short d and pv apical setae; in ♀ tibia slightly expanded, and white dusted along pd to p surfaces. Fore tarsomeres without modifications. Mid femur without av or pv setae; 1 a at basal third; without preapical ad; 1 p preapical, preceded by a p seta at apical 1/4. Mid tibia with 0 ad and 1 p; with moderate a, v and pv apicals, and a short d. Mid tarsosmeres without modifications. Hind coxa without a seta on posterior apical margin. Hind femur in ♂ with a row of short mainly spinose pv setae, none more than half femoral depth; ♂ without av setae, but the setulae in apical third becoming rather spine-like, similar to those on pv surface but usually shorter; ventral surfaces completely bare in ♀; ad row complete; 0 pd preapical. Hind tibia with 1 short ad, without av or pd; d preapical seta short, equal to tibial depth, the ad absent; 1 av but no pv apical. Hind tarsomeres not modified.
Wing. Narrow. Not darkened at base, but with a dark band beyond crossvein dm-cu, followed by a milky-white tip. Tegula and basicosta yellow. Crossvein r-m placed well apicad of the point where vein R1 enters costa; dm-cu straight, longer than apical section of vein CuA1. Vein M running straight to wing-margin. Calypters white to creamy, with creamy margins. Haltere yellow.
Abdomen. Ground-colour black. Syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5 not modified in shape ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 34–38 ); sternite 2 very narrow; ♂ sternite 3 with a large boss-like tubercle ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 28–33 ), and sternite 5 with a median excavation on hindmargin. Tergites subshining black with very thin dark brown dust; ♂ with white dusted spots as in Figs 32–33 View FIGURES 28–33 (tergite 4 entirely dark); these spots all smaller in ♀, that on syntergite 1+2 restricted to dorsal surface, that on tergite 3 forming a band that extends to ventral edge, that on tergite 5 small and oval. ♂ epandrium subshining. ♀ ovipositor with upper part of tergite 7 white dusted, visible tergal areas otherwise dark like rest of abdomen. Sternites 1–3 grey dusted, sternite 4 subshining black. In ♂ syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5 each with 2 pairs of weak lateral marginal setae, those on tergite 5 forming a row, without discals; shorter and less erect in ♀. ♂ sternites 2–4 with sparse setulae.
Ƌ terminalia. Epandrium attached to tergite 5, the intermediate tergite 6 and syntergosternite 8 lost; with 2 spiracles on lower anterior edge ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 34–38 ). Sternite 6 vestigial but clearly developed, symmetrical, withdrawn beneath sternite 5. Surstylus well-developed, distinct and discrete from epandrium ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 34–38 ). Cercal plate moderately divided ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 34–38 ). Hypandrium attached to surstylus and, posteriorly, to wall of epandrium close to inner dorsal tip of cercal plate. Phallic complex ( Figs 37–38 View FIGURES 34–38 ): praegonite absent; postgonite weakly sclerotised, short, curved; phallapodeme enlarged, bifid at mid-length and the branches fusing with hypandrium; phallus short, juxta eversible, spinulose and containing about 7 large thorn-bearing platelets.
♀ ovipositor ( Figs 39–41 View FIGURES 39–41 ). Tergite 6 complete dorsally; tergite 7 complete dorsally and large, on lateral surface with an extra, large, superimposed fold or lobe on each side, in dry specimens this appearing shining and contrasting with the dusted tergite; tergite 8 divided dorsally, enlarged below. Sternites 6 and 7 large, broad, plate- like; sternite 8 consisting of 2 small plates and a third, median, plate. Epiproct V-shaped, with 1 pair of setae. Hypoproct not large, spinose. Cercus weakly spinose. 3 spermathecae.
Measurements. Wing-length, 3.0–4.0 mm (♂), 2.5–4.0 mm (♀). Body-length, 3.5–4.5mm (♂), 3.5–5.0 mm (♀).
Biology. Unknown. Adults appear to be euryoecious, having been collected in a wide range of habitats: rivers, lakes, swamps, inland and coastal, and even the most arid (Uluru).
Distribution. Known only from Australia (WA, NT, Q, NSW, ACT, SA).
