Lesteva View in CoL (s.str.) smetanai Shavrin , sp.n.
( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 2 , 3−4 View FIGURES 3 – 4 )
Type material examined: Holotype ♂: ‘ TAIWAN Hualien | Hsien, Taroko N.P. | Chungyantienshi | (Riv.) Waterfall | 2300m 10.V.1990 | A. Smetana [T50]’ <rectangular label, printed>, ‘ HOLOTYPE | Lesteva (s.str.) | smetanai | Shavrin A.V. des. 2015’ <red rectangular label, printed> (cSm).
Paratypes: 2 ♂, 3 ♀: same data as the holotype (cSm, 1 ♂ —CSh). All paratypes with my additional label: ‘ PARATYPE | Lesteva (s.str.) | smetanai | Shavrin A.V. des. 2015’ <red rectangular label, printed>.
Description. Measurements (n=6): WH: 0.70–0.72; LH: 0.47–0.52; LA (holotype): 1.70; LE: 0.18−0.20; LT: 0.10−0.12; LP: 0.67–0.75; WPMax: 0.87–0.92; WPMin: 0.61–0.67; LEl: 1.13–1.21; WE: 1.38–1.52; WA: 1.23−1.47; LAed: 0.82; TL: 3.35–3.70 (holotype: 3.50).
Body reddish brown; ocelli, basal third of pronotum, apical margins of elytra, legs, abdominal tergites VII–VIII (and sometimes abdominal tergite VI) yellow brown; scutellum reddish brown with brown lateral margins; each elytron with moderately wide yellow brown macula, extending from shoulders towards suture; antennae yellow to yellow brown; mouthparts and tarsi yellow. Pubescence of body short and tender, decumbent, yellow. Punctation of head very dense, irregular and moderately deep and small; pronotum with slightly denser punctation than that on head; scutellum with dense small punctation; abdominal tergites with fine sparse punctures. Forebody glossy, without microsculpture; abdomen glossy, with well defined isodiametric microsculpture. Habitus as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 2 .
Head 1.3−1.4 times wider than long, with small prominent eyes; eyes 1.6−1.8 times longer than temples; ocelli large, distance between ocelli slightly shorter than distance between ocellus and posterior margin of eye. Antennae long, reaching one-third of elytra, with elongated antennomeres; measurements of antennomeres (length/width, holotype): I: 0.17 × 0.08; II: 0.15 × 0.05; III: 0.15 × 0.04; IV −VIII: 0.15× 0.05; IX: 0.13 × 0.05; X: 0.13 × 0.07; XI: 0.22 × 0.07.
Pronotum strongly transverse, convex, 1.2 times wider than head, widest in anterior third and strongly narrowed towards base; median part of disc of pronotum with wide indistinct longitudinal impressions.
Elytra moderately short and wide, 1.6 times longer than pronotum, with rounded hind margins. Wings fully developed.
Tarsomere I of metatarsus visibly longer than combined length of tarsomeres II −III or tarsomere V.
Abdomen slightly narrower than width of elytra; abdominal tergites IV −V with paired tomentose spots.
Male. Apical margin of abdominal sternite VIII with widely rounded deep emargination. Aedeagus ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3 – 4 ) with median lobe gradually narrowing towards sharp pointed apex; parameres very wide in basal third, reaching apex of aedeagus, with four setae, two of them located on apex of paramere and two on inner side of setiferous surface basally; endophallus with very long paired parallel structures. Aedeagus laterally as in Fig. 4 View FIGURES 3 – 4 .
Female. Apical margin of abdominal sternite VIII straight.
Comparative notes. Based on the punctation of the forebody, the presence of similar yellow brown macula on each elytron and the general shape of the aedeagus, G. smetanai sp. n. is similar to two Japanese species: L. gracilis Watanabe, 1990 , described from Honshu, and L. fenestrata Sharp, 1874 , known from Honshu and Kyushu. From both species it differs by the wider pronotum, by the presence of indistinct longitudinal impressions on the disc of the pronotum, by the shape of the parameres (parameres of L. gracilis slightly narrower and shorter; apical part of parameres of L. fenestrata wider) and by the internal structure of the aedeagus. Additionally, from L. gracilis it differs by the slightly smaller body and by the significantly paler coloration ( L. gracilis with black body), and by the shorter and wider elytra.
Etymology. The new species is named after my colleague and collector of the type material Aleš Smetana (Ottawa). Bionomics. Specimens taken by sifting various debris, fallen leaves and moss in the spray zone of a large waterfall in an old mixed forest (Smetana, pers. comm.).
