Protologue citation:—[ TURKEY] “Mesopotamia”.

Type (neotype, designated here):—[Specimen from a cultivated plant]. Iris persica var. mardinense Tubergen, Catal. 1900 , native of Mesopotamia, Comm. Hor. C. Ellis, [fl.], January 1900, s.coll. s.n. ( K 01045491!).

Notes:— Iris persica var. mardinensis was described by Nicholson (1901) based on plants from Mesopotamia. The epithet “ mardinensis ” is probably derived from “ Mardin ”, a city in south-eastern Turkey. The cultivated specimen, preserved in the Kew collection, is designated here as neotype of I. persica var. mardinensis . This variety is distinguished by the flowers of a grey-purple colour with spots, they show a similar colouration to those of I. haussknechtii Siehe ( Mathew 1989: 160).
