Taxonomic history. Guenée (1858) described the species with an illustration of male. Later he added a description of the female (possibly in error as there is no information provided to verify differences between sexes) from Cayenne [ French Guiana] deposited in his own collection ( Guenée 1877). Pagenstecher (1892) placed the species in the subgenus Siculodes , but without justification.

Type material. A male syntype was found in the NHMUK that included the author’s original labels that correspond to information provided in the original description. To give stability to the proposed name and ensure

the correct identification of the species, this male is herein designated as a lectotype with the following labels: Hep [ialodes]. Follicula Gn. pl. du Spec. Cayenne. Étrange créature qui a du reste, tous les caractères des Siculides. / Gen. Hepialodes Gn. pl. du Species. Antennes filiformes (?) à base velue—Palpes minces, recourbés, à 3° article filiforme, long.—trompe presque nulle.—pattes post[érieures]. fortement velus, à ergot longs et minces.—Corps lisse: l’abdomen comique obtus, ne dépassant pas les ailes—ailes très larges, les 1 tronquées et falquées à l’apex, échancrés au bord interne, les II prolongées à l’angle intern—en queue spatulée fripcés [unreadable] ou gaufrées, cellules fermées par un trait métalliq [sic] droit / Ex. Musaeo Ach. Guenée / Ex Oberth̹r Coll. Brit. Mus. 1927—3. / Ƌ Pyralidae Brit. Mus. Natural history. Immature stages and host plant unknown. Based on specimen label data, the species occurs in forests and cerrado biotopes and adults were caught in January, February, May, July, September, October and December.
