Female body length = 1.04–1.21 mm (n = 4).

Colour. Head, mesosoma and metasoma brown-black; frontal depression paler than remainder of head; clypeus and mandibles red-brown; entire antenna yellow-brown, A5–A12 darker than preceding antennomeres; coxae dark brown, remainder of leg yellow-brown.

Head. 1.4× as wide as high, 1.3× as high as long. IOS: 0.7× head width, 1.8× eye length. POL: LOL: OOL: 19.7: 8.2: 3.4. OOL: 1.3× MOD. Compound eye: ovate (L: W = 13.9: 10.9). Sculpture of orbital furrow: foveate. Inner orbits in frontal view: almost parallel to each other. Central keel on frons: present, extending half the length of frontal depression. Malar sulcus: indicated as a furrow. Shape of frontal depression: triangular. L: W of frontal depression: 19.0: 24.4. Width of frontal depression: 0.9× IOS. Sculpture of frontal depression: central keel with transverse carinae on either side, space between carinae smooth; large irregular reticulations present laterally; dorsal 1/3 of frontal depression almost smooth with a concave carina dorsally. Submedial carina of frontal depression: restricted to dorsal half. AOD in dorsal view: 2.5× OOL. Sculpture of frons sans frontal depression: coriaceous reticulate with dense setae. Sculpture of vertex: with uneven cells bearing rugose sculpture, densely setose. Hyperoccipital carina: present. Sculpture of gena: coriaceous reticulate.

Mesosoma. L: W of mesoscutum: 17.5: 34.0. Sculpture of mesoscutum: entirely coriaceous reticulate except for lateral and posteromedial smooth areas. Scutoscutellar sulcus: weakly foveate. L: W of mesoscutellum: 9.5: 27.4. Sculpture of mesoscutellum: coriaceous reticulate, with dense brown setae laterad. Posterior mesoscutellar sulcus: foveate. Sculpture of metascutellum: irregularly foveate. Posterior margin of metascutellum: straight. Sculpture of metanotal trough: with small foveae. Lateral propodeal area: laterally wide and narrowing centrad. Sculpture of lateral propodeal area: sparsely setigerous punctae. Posterior propodeal projections: short. Pronotal cervical sulcus: not foveate. Sculpture of lateral pronotal area: dorsally alutaceous, ventrally smooth. Prespecular sulcus: with transverse foveae. Sculpture of speculum: transversely carinate. Femoral depression: transversely carinate. Episternal sulcus: foveate. Postacetabular sulcus: indicated as a narrow furrow. Mesepimeral sulcus: indicated as shallow foveae ventrally. Sculpture of posterior mesepimeral area: indicated medially as smooth area. Mesopleural carina: indicated ventrally. Mesopleural pit: absent. Metapleural sulcus: foveate. Sculpture of dorsal metapleural area: foveate, densely setose. Sculpture of ventral metapleural area: foveate, sparsely setose. Paracoxal sulcus: not foveate. L: W of fore wing: 77.1: 35.1. Ratio of length of m: st: pm: 5.5: 8.6: 4.6. L: W of hind wing: 61.8: 12.5. Length of hind wing marginal cilia: 0.5× width of wing. Shape of submarginalis: straight and adjacent to anterior margin of wing in basal half, then dipping before reaching marginalis. Metasoma. L: W of metasoma: 37.0: 43.0, 1.2× as wide as long. Anterior margin of T1: weakly concave medially. Basal foveae on T1: absent. Sculpture of T1: smooth with setigerous punctae. Sculpture of T2: smooth with setigerous punctae; basal foveae absent.

Etymology

This species is named after the outstanding American evolutionary biologist Patricia Adair Gowaty, who exploded the myth of sexual fidelity in many female song birds and demonstrated that A.G. Bateman’s much quoted, classic study on sexual selection in fruit flies was methodologically flawed, making his conclusions untenable. The name is treated as a noun in the genitive case.

Diagnosis

This species is unique in the H. insulare group in having smooth metasoma with setigerous punctae and absence of basal foveae on T1.
