Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Feni Island as Gymnosarda nuda by Munro (1958: 264); reported from northern and southern New Ireland by Collette & Chao (1975: 595). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 June 2014; a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 12 Oct. 2007; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Comores and Mascarenes east to French Polynesia, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to New Caledonia and Rapa. Pelagic, near coral reefs, 10–100 m depth. Marine.
