Gonia genei Rondani, 1863 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 14.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Venezuela ” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Tachinidei - Gen. Dejeania a Belvosia ): Gonia genei Rnd., Amer. mer. [= South America] / M. Zool. N° 11336 / ♂.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Guimarães 1971: 175, O’Hara et al. 2020: 459).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 171) identified some specimens of both sexes received from MRSN as Gonia capitata (De Geer, 1776) erroneously attributed to Meigen. Rondani (1863: 14) examined the single male specimen he had in his private collection “ Osservato …. l’individuo che mi rimane di quella Gonia [I observed the remaining specimen I have of that Gonia ]” and considered it as belonging to a different species, which he named Gonia genei . This latter specimen was sold to the MZUN in 1866 (see p. 13). Costa (1866: 31) listed two MZUN specimens numbered “655”. The MZUN also contains a (non-type) female. Therefore, the syntype series should be both in the MRSN and in the MZUN. No specimen under the name Gonia genei is present in the MRSN (F. Giachino, pers. comm., September 2020).
