Distribution (Map 25): southern Europe (Balkans) to Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and southern Armenia. -
In Iran: Kermanshah, Lorestan and Qazvin provinces [Rajabi (1986) also notes Kerman province].
Bionomics. The species is univoltine throughout its range. Flight period July to August; collected in Armenia
on 15–16.IX 1975. Inhabits lowlands to high altitudes (up to 3000 m); more typical of arid biotopes and low-
lands. Larvae are polyphagous and recorded from various plants. Rajabi (1986) lists Amygdalus and Cratae-
gus and Modarres Awal (1994 & 1997) adds “sloe tree” ( Prunus spinosa : Rosaceae ) as host plants in Iran.
Pupation in parchment-like cocoon on the soil or on bark. Eggs hibernate.

MAP 26. Chilena sordida (Erschoff, 1874) superspecies complex.
Bionomics. The species is native to arid biotopes and occurs deep into the desert zone. Several (3–4) generations per year depending on altitude and weather conditions, and therefore on the wing practically all year round. From sea level to 1600 m. Pupae hibernate or estivate. Caterpillars olygophagous and feed on Alhagi persarum Boiss. et Buchse , A. canescens Shap. , A. camelorum , A. maurorum ( Fabaceae = Leguminosae) and in southern Iran on Prosopis stephaniana (Wiltshire 1982) . Modarres Awal (1994 & 1997: 208) listed screw bean ( Prosopis sp.: Papilionaceae ) as a host plant in Iran. Pupation in a strong, parchment-like whitish cocoon on the branches of food plant. There are several distinct species apparently under the name “ sordida Ersch ”. These are indistinguishable in most cases by male genitalia but have distinct female genitalia. Because the taxonomy of the genus needs substantial revision, we provisionally consider populations of “ sordida ” from Iran as s superspecies, and used the name sordida Erschoff collectively in reference to them.
