Diagnosis. these characters apply only to the male sex. Hind femur without setae from base up to ventral pre-apical protuberance, two rows of av up to pre-apical protuberance, 1 row of long p that increase in length on pre-apical protuberance and form a set of longer setae with weakly curved apices, posterior surface with apical half setulose; hind tibia with 1 row of 5 ad and 1 median av.

Description. Holotype male: body length: 3.6 mm; wing length: 3.4 mm.

Head: eye bare. Frontal vitta velvety black. Interocular space reduced, 0.08 mm. Fr 11. Ocellar triangle black; oc proclinate and developed, 4 less developed setulae on ocellar area. Poc divergent. Fronto-orbital plate greyish pollinose, upper area shiny black. Parafacial greyish pollinose and setulose, with short setae on basal half, beginning on insertion of pedicel. Gena black with weak silver-golden pollinosity. Scape black, apical margin golden pollinose, 1 short seta reaching pedicel. Pedicel black with apical margin yellowish, silver-golden pollinose, and short dorsal setae. Postpedicel silver-golden pollinose, 3 times the length of pedicel. Arista dark brown and pubescent. Palpus dark brown and claviform.

Thorax: black, grey pollinose; scutum without vittae, brown on median region and up to posterior ia area; scutellum brown on basal half. Acr 2:3, not arranged in rows. Dc 2:3. 2 pprn developed and 1 shorter. Two short pra, seta near suture longer. Prepm without ground setulae. Pre-basal pre-scutellar seta absent, area with very weak setae. Subapical scutellar setae absent. Four pairs of discal scutellar setae.

Wing: yellowish, with tegula brown; basicosta, sub-costal sclerite, stem vein and auxiliary sclerites pale yellow ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 19 ), mark yellowish on bc, basal portion of c and br and posterior portion of sc and r1. Calypters pale yellow with margin brownish. Haltere whitish with base yellow.

Legs: brown with apical margin of femur and tibia weakly yellowish, tarsi brown and pulvilli yellowish. Fore femur with 1 row of short av; 1 row of short pv that increase in length on apical third; 2 rows of short and strong pd; 1 row of p on apical half running towards dorsal surface. Fore tibia with 2 rows of short d, 1 pre-apical; 1 apical v. Fore tarsus with 1 long and thin v with curved apices on first tarsomere. Mid femur constricted on pre-apical ventral surface; 3 long pre-apical d; 1 row of sparse av that decrease in length towards apex; 1 row of pv forming a ctenidium on apical third; 1 row of long p ending in 6 apical stronger setae. Mid tibia without constriction on ventral surface, on apical half setulose and 2 apical setae, one long and the other short; 1 pre-apical d; 1 a on edge of apical third and 2 apical a; 1 apical av; 1 median and 1 apical pv. Hind coxa with 2 setae on posterior margin. Hind femur with weak pre-apical protuberance ( Figs. 30 View FIGURES 20 – 37 , 48 View FIGURES 38 – 55 ); 1 row of long p that increase in length and form a set of setae with weakly curved apices on pre-apical protuberance, posterior surface setulose on apical half ( Fig. 48 View FIGURES 38 – 55 ); 1 row of a running towards dorsal surface and ending in 2 short and strong setae, on apical half with 1 row of long setae running towards anteroventral surface and ending in 3 longer setae on pre-apical protuberance; 2 rows of av up to pre-apical protuberance ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 20 – 37 ); ventral surface bare up to pre-apical protuberance. Hind tibia with 1 median d and 1 long pre-apical d; 1 row of 5 ad and 1 pre-apical ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 20 – 37 ); 1 apical short a; 1 median av and 1 strong apical. Hind tarsus with 1 short and strong v on first tarsomere.

Abdomen: trimaculate. Tergite 3 conspicuously setulose laterally. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 as in Fig. 66 View FIGURES 56 – 73 . Terminalia ( Figs. 84 View FIGURES 83 – 91 , 102 View FIGURES 101 – 109 ): epandrium wider than long, with setae mostly on basal half; cercal plate V-shaped and fused at apex; surstylus short, completely fused with epandrium, with basal, short lateral-ventral expansions and with apical setae, inner basal region setulose, apex with short setae; bacilliform process absent; hypandrium and associated structures as in Fig. 120 View FIGURES 118 – 127 .

Biology. According to label data, Fannia magdalena sp. nov. is associated with decomposing organic matter in dry areas of tropical forest, in low and warm areas.

Comments. These characters apply only to the male sex. Fannia magdalena sp. nov. is morphologically close to Fannia sabroskyi Seago, 1954 and Fannia porce sp. nov., but can be diagnosed by the chaetotaxy of the hind femur. On the posteroventral and ventral surfaces, on pre-apical protuberance, with a tuft of developed setae that have hooked apices. This species belongs to the sub-group pusio of the canicularis group.

Etymology. Name in apposition. The species epithet refers to the Magdalena River, which crosses eighteen states in Colombia, among which is Antioquia, in the city of Puerto Berrío, type-locality of the species, located in the Central Magdalena Valley.
