41. Euxolus viridis var. rubens Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) View in CoL , syn. nov.

Type (lectotype here designated):—[Icon] Blitum rubens from Dodoëns (1583, image of the lectotype is available at http://bibdigital.rjb.

csic.es/ing/Libro.php?Libro=1653&Hojas=). = Amaranthus blitum Linnaeus (1753: 990) var. blitum . Type (lectotype designated by Filias et al. 1980: 149−150):—EUROPE. Habitat in Europa temparatiore, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.14 (LINN

[digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11640/).

Nomenclatural notes:—The var. rubens was described by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) to distinguish small forms red or purpureous coloured (“ planta minor, rubella aut purpurea ”). Three synonyms from Bauhin (1623: 118), Matthioli (1674: 357), and Dodoëns (1583: 606) were cited; the latter two authors provided illustrations that are part of the original material. I have not been able to trace any specimen elegible as lectotype, so I am forced to choice one of the images selected. I here designated that by Dodoens as the lectotype of the name Euxolus viridis var. rubens .

Taxonomical notes:—On the basis of the Moquin’s diagnosis, the lectotype, and the description given by Bauhin (1623), Matthioli (1674), and Dodoëns (1583), the diagnostic characters of the var. rubens completely overlap the current concept of Am. blitum var. blitum (see e.g, Carretero 1990, Iamonico & Das 2014, Iamonico 2015), so I here propose a synonymization (new synonymy).
