42. Euxolus viridis var. purpurascens Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) View in CoL , syn. nov.
Type (lectotype here designated):—[Icon] Blitum majus rubrum from Morandi (1744, image of the lectotype is available at http://bibdigital. rjb.csic.es/ing/Libro.php?Libro=3045&Hojas=).
= Amaranthus blitum Linnaeus (1753: 990) var. blitum View in CoL .
Type (lectotype designated by Filias et al. 1980: 149−150):—EUROPE. Habitat in Europa temparatiore, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.14 (LINN [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11640/).
Nomenclatural notes:—The larger and dark-purple forms of E. viridis was named by by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) as var. purpurascens (“ planta major obscure purpurea ”). The author cited two synonyms from Bauhin (1623: 118), and Morandi (1744: 120), the latter one providing an image that is part of the original material. Lacking specimens for the lectotypification purposes, the Morandi’s illustration represents the only extant original material. Fortunately, it well matches the Moquin’s diangosis being a coloured drawing, and it is here designated as the lectotype of the name Euxolus viridis var. purpurascens .
Taxonomical notes: — As discussed under the previous variety ( var. rubens ), the proposed diagnostic characters for the var. purpurascens (especially the colour of the plants) overlap the current concept of Am. blitum s.str. as currently circumscribed (see e.g, Pignatti 1982, Costea et al. 2001, Iamonico & Das 2014). I here propose a synonymization of the two names (new synonymy).
