Europiella stigmosa (Uhler) View in CoL
Figures 2 View Fig , 5 View Fig , 11 View Fig
Agalliastes stigmosus Uhler, 1893: 379 View in CoL (n. sp., descr.).
DIAGNOSIS: Recognized by the relatively small size, elongate oval body shape, mottled coloration of the dorsum (fig. 2), generally pale femora with a relatively large number of dark spots, and the vesica with a long, flattened, decurved, anterior apical spine and shorter, flattened posterior spine (fig. 5), a condition shared with E. umbrina and E. consors . Distinguished from E. umbrina by its lighter coloration and from E. consors by its much smaller size and more ovate body form in the males; distinguished from both species by the pale antennae in E. stigmosa . Sexual dimorphism in E. stigmosa (and E. umbrina ) is weak, the body form in the females being nearly the same as that in the males.
REDESCRIPTION: Male: Small, relatively broadbodied species, total length 2.78–3.06, width pronotum 0.96–1.12. COLORATION (fig. 2): General coloration somewhat mottled, dorsum generally pale with browntoblack blotches; antennal segment 1 black, sometimes black only basally, segment 2 at most darkened at extreme base, segments 3 and 4 varying from pale to very dark; labium pale basally, segments 3 and 4 black; much of venter dark; coxae partially pale; trochanters pale; femora pale or weakly darkened and ornamented with numerous dark spots or blotches; tibiae with pale background coloration with black spines with black bases. SURFACE AND VESTITURE (fig. 11D): Surface and vestiture as in generic diagnosis. STRUCTURE (fig. 11): Elongate ovoid, corial margin moderately convex. GENITALIA (fig. 5): Pygophore moderately large relative to total size of abdomen; vesica similar in structure of apical spines to E. umbrina and E. consors , anterior spine long and decurved, posterior spine shorter and nearly erect.
Female: Coloration often paler than in males, with dorsum sometimes almost entire pale. Body form very similar to male. Total length 2.65–2.91, width pronotum 1.02–1.09.
HOSTS: Known to breed on Artemisia californica , A. ludoviciana , and A. tridentata (Asteraceae) . The record from Lupinus is certainly a sitting record.
DISTRIBUTION: Widely distributed in western North America , except for wetter coastal areas, ranging from British Columbia south to northern Baja California and east to Nebraska and Oklahoma.
DISCUSSION: Schuh et al. (1995) documented the identity of E. stigmosa .
