CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Palpada scutellaris ( Fabricius, 1805) ( Thompson et al. 1976: 109) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1848b: 69) described Eristalis cognatus from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, from material collected in South America by V. Ghiliani. Rondani (1851: 358) proposed the new replacement name Eristalis agnatus for Eristalis cognatus , preoccupied by Wiedemann (1824: 37). Costa (1866: 31) listed a single MZUN specimen, as Eristalomyia agnata , numbered “621”. We found two syntypes in this study. Although Rondani (1848b: 63) only gave the type locality as “ Brasile ”, Papavero (1973: 343) gave a more accurate type locality based on a note in Spinola (1853) that said all specimens collected by Ghiliani in 1846 were collected in Belem, Pará, Brazil.
