Floral pedicel 1.7−2.4 × 0.2 cm; sepals lime green, dorsal lanceolate, 1.2−1.8 × 0.3−0.4 cm, laterals lanceolate, 1.1−1.2 × 0.3−0.4 cm, pendent, margin entire, apex acute; petals lime green, spatulate, 1.1−1.2 × 0.4 cm, pendent, margin entire, apex acute to mucronate; lip claw 0.15−0.20 × 0.10−0.15 cm, lateral lobes free relative to midlobe, 0.6 × 0.2−0.3 cm, white, at a 90° angle to the midlobe (in the flattened lip), not overlapping it, margin entire, apex obtuse, midlobe elliptic-ovate, 0.5 × 0.4 cm, white with few pinkish streaks, conduplicate, margin undulate, apex pointed, callus cymbiform, acute; column clavate, 0.6−0.7 × 0.2 cm, clinandrium apex tridentate, lateral teeth triangular, apex acute, column arms, 0.10−0.15 × 0.10−0.15cm, apex obtuse; stigma elliptic, with basal hooks; anther one, yellow, 0.12−0.15 × 0.15−0.20 cm.

Distribution and habitat:— Previously known only from Ecuador (Govaerts et al. 2013; Dodson 1989), this species is for the first recorded for Brazil, where it has been collected in Amazonas and Pará States ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ). It is likely that it should be present also in the Peruvian Amazon.

Phenology:— Flowering May–January.

Etymology:— Honouring Leonard Thien, who helped collect the type.

Taxonomic notes:— Encyclia thienii is easily confused with E. chloroleuca and has been considered a synonym of the latter by Withner (2000). However, E. thienii is smaller (ca. 6–26 cm) in relation to E. chloroleuca (ca. 35 cm), and the lip midlobe of E. thienii is elliptic with an apiculate apex, whereas E. chloroleuca it is rounded with a truncate apex.

Selected specimens examined: BRAZIL. Amazonas: Manaus, INPA Campina Biological Reserve, 15 March 1975, Braga 2809 (INPA); Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, February 1991, Silva & Silva 146 (MG). Pará: Oriximiná, Porto Trombeta, 16 January 2010, Silva 3353 (MG); Ourém, Butuira Farm, 21 May 1994, Silva 325 (MG).
