Emphytopsis punctata Wei & Nie (Fig. 1)

Emphytopsis punctata Wei & Nie, 1998: 368 .

Description: Holotype: Ƥ.

Body length 10 mm. Brownish yellow, following parts black: ocellar triangle, middle quadrate macula on postocellar area, curved long stripe on temple, apex of mandible, lateral margins of pronotum, propleuron largely, broad elliptical spot on prescutum, one large elongated spot contiguous with small round spot on each lobe of scutum, central area of mesopostnotum, anterior slope of parapsis of metanotum, two small spots on metapostnotum, ventral side of mesepisternum, stripe on posterior margin of mesepimeron, posterior 0.6 of tergites 1–7 and posterior half of tergite 8 dorsally, apical sheath; each band on abdominal tergites hardly divided at middle. Antenna blackish toward apex, basal 3 antennomeres brown. Legs pale yellow, broad stripe on ventral side of hind femur black, apical 0.3 of hind femur dorsally, apical 0.25 of hind tibia deep brown. Body hairs silver brown. Wings hyaline, vein C and basal 0.3 of stigma pale brown, apical 0.7 of stigma and other veins blackish brown (Fig. 1a).

Clypeus and frons sparsely punctured, postocellar area scarcely and minutely punctured, head otherwise impunctate, shiny; mesonotum sparsely, minutely punctured, punctures on posterior half of mesoscutellum and posttergite large, dense; metanotum impunctate, shiny; punctures on upper part of mesepisternum quite large, dense, interspaces between punctures linear, polished; ventral side of mesepisternum minutely and sparsely punctured, mesepimeron microsculptured; abdominal tergites feebly but clearly microsculptured and sparsely punctured from first tergite.

Anterior margin of labrum roundly protruding, anterior margin of clypeus deeply incised to 0.7× clypeus length (Fig. 1c); malar space as long as radius of middle ocellus; POL: OOL: OCL = 6: 11: 22; postocellar area feebly elevated, 1.2× as long as wide, lateral furrows slightly curved outwards at middle; head behind eyes (upper hind orbit) slightly dilated, almost as long as eye in dorsal view (13: 14) (Fig. 1b). Relative length of antennomeres about 7: 4: 16: 13: 11: 7: 4: 4: 5. Mesoscutellum roundly elevated, posterior slope shorter than anterior slope; distance between cenchri 1.5× the major axis of a cenchrus. Hind basitarsus as long as tarsomeres 2–5 together; claw with inner tooth slightly shorter than outer tooth (Fig. 1f). Vein R+M in forewing as long as free part of Sc, lower outer corner of cell 2Rs weakly extended, vein 2r joining cell 2Rs at about middle; petiole of anal cell in hind wing about 0.25× length of cu-a. Ovipositor sheath as long as metabasitarsus, apical sheath (valvula 3) as long as basal sheath (valvifer 2), lateral view as in Fig. 1g, setae on lateral sides of apical sheath curved at apex. Lancet with 21 serrulae, each serrula with 5–6 large subbasal teeth, membrane between 8th and 9th serrulae as long as wide of a serrula, 5th–7th serrulae as in Fig. 1h, 11th–13th serrulae as in Fig. 1i.

Male: Body length 9.5 mm (Fig. 1j). Body colour and structure similar to female except for: propleuron, ventral side of mesepisternum, mesepimeron and legs without black macula, black bands on abdominal tergites much smaller, antenna pale brown, darkened toward apex; head behind eyes narrowed, distinctly shorter than eye in dorsal view; postocellar area slightly longer than wide. Subgenital plate longer than wide, apex round; harpe, gonostipe, gonolacinia, volsella and parapenis as in Fig. 1k; penis valve as in Fig. 1l.

FIGURE 1. Emphytopsis punctata Wei & Nie, 1998 . a. Adult female; b. Head, dorsal view; c. Clypeus and labrum; d. Left mandible; e. Right mandible; f. Claw; g. Apex of abdomen, lateral view; h. 5th –7th serrulae; i. 11th–13th serrulae; j. Adult, male; K. Harpe, gonostipe, gonolacinia, volsella and parapenis; l. Valviceps.

Variation: Body length 10–11 mm, brown part of antenna in female varies from basal 3 to 5 antennomeres in different individuals.
