status

Elpidium sp.

This species occurred in large numbers in bromeliad phytotelmata, rich in leaf litter, everywhere on St. Thomas. They occurred in both wild and ornamental bromeliads. Elpidium is a large genus found in bromeliads, and many are narrow range endemics in the Caribbean Islands ( Pinto and Jocque 2013; Pereira et al. 2019), but there are no records from the Virgin Islands. The plants sampled were all in ornamental gardens, and were not native to the Caribbean; thus the ostracod may or may not be an introduced species.
