( Figures 31, 31a, 31b, 31c, 31d, 31e, 31f View FIGURES 31 – 31 , 43h View FIGURES 43 , 90 View FIGURES 60 – 98 , 129 View FIGURES 99 – 137 )
Type locality. Sicily, Messina, Reitano (Fig. 171).
Diagnosis. A small-sized Dodomeira (3.70–3.85 mm) belonging to the pfisteri group with slender body (length/width ratio: 1.72–1.72) and quite sub-cylindrical elytra shape. Within the species group, it is recognisable by body (antennae, legs) little robust, elongate but not parallel elytra with sparse and recumbent setae (15°–20°), rostrum with divergent sides towards the apex, and protibia with three acute spines on inner edge. Sizes: pronotum (length: 0.80–0.85 mm, width: 0.80–0.90 mm, ratio 0.85–0.90), elytra (length: 2.40–2.50 mm, width: 1.40–1.45 mm, ratio 1.72–1.72).
Type series. Holotype female with the following labels: [transparent label] genitalia in DHMF // [white, printed] ♀ // [white, printed] “ Sicilia, ME [Messina], Reitano , 250 m, vaglio olivo, 19.III. [19]’08” // [white, printed]" legg. Bellò & Chemello , Baviera & Rando” // [green, printed] “Collezione Cesare Bellò” // [red, printed] “ Dodomeira giustoi sp. n., Holotype, det. Bellò 2016 ” ( CBE) .
Paratypes. 1 female: “ Sicilia, ME [Messina], Reitano, 250 m, vaglio olivo, 19.III. [19]’ 0 8, legg. Bellò & Chemello , Baviera & Rando ” ( CBA) ; 3 females “ Sicilia, Castelbuono, Failla ( MSNG) .
Types are five (all females).
Other material. 1 female “ Sicilia, Castelbuono,?leg. Ragusa ” ( CBE) considered provisionally as belonging to this species.
Holotype. Female. Slender body with elytra elongate, sub-cylindrical. Total length: 3.70 mm.
Dorsal vestiture with imbricate and brown scales with metallic sheen.
Rostrum covered by brown scales, transverse (length/width ratio 0.67) with divergent sides towards the apex. Pterygia barely protruding from the rostrum. Epistome absent. Mesorostrum slightly concave, anteriorly with twelve thin, curved, short and semi-erect setae. Vertex quite wide but very convex (vertex width / mesorostrum width: ratio 1.85) with several, elongate, clavate, raised setae. Interocular space without fovea.
Lateral, quite small, rather spherical eyes protruding from outline of head. Antenna little robust, elongate with recumbent, golden-silvery, widened setae. Antenna with ratio 0.70 (scape length: 0.70 mm, funicle length: 1.00 mm). Scape clubbed, slightly more robust than funicle, curved at the basal third and progressively thickening towards apex. Funicle segments including club, relative lengths as follows: 10.5.4.4.3.3.3.15; first six segments with widened setae silvery; segments 5–7 pearl-shaped. Club at least twice wider than funicle, elongate, fusiform with suture between first and second segment visible.
Pronotum clothed with brown scales, quite sub-square (length: 0.80 mm, width: 0.85 mm, ratio: 0.95), subconical, rounded, with maximum width in the middle, less wide at base of its anterior margin, with short, clavate, golden recumbent setae. Punctation usually covered by scales. Scutellum not visible.
Elytra (length: 2.40 mm, width: 1.40 mm, ratio: 1.72) slightly vaulted dorsally, sub-cylindrical, covered by brown scales, with flat suture, wider at the middle. Elytral declivity with clavate-spatulate, short, recumbent setae (15°–20°). Punctation of striae, shallow, rather catenulate and impressed. Interstriae flat, with spatulate-clavate, short, golden, recumbent setae. Humeri short and straight.
Quite short and slender legs clothed by brown scales and with short, widened golden setae. Femora little clubbed. Protibia with three acute spines on inner edge, with mucro on inner apical angle. Protibia quite sinuous on inner edge, metatibia and mesotibia straight in side view.
Tarsal segment 1 short, conical; segment 2 short and transverse; segment 3 shallowly bilobed; all segments with thin golden setae. Onychium curved, quite robust and short.
Female genitalia. See Figures: spermatheca ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 60 – 98 ), sternite VIII ( Fig. 129 View FIGURES 99 – 137 ). Genitalia were examined in three specimens.
Paratype variability. With the holotype, apart from the size, not significant differences were observed. Specimen other material differ from paratype for size and more robust antennae.
Distribution. See Fig. 141. Italian endemic. Known near type locality Reitano.
Etymology. This species named after our friend and colleague Giusto (Carlo) weevils Apionidae specialist, in appreciation of his cooperation in our study on Peritelini .
Ecology and Phenology. Collected D. giustoi by Berlese and Winkler extractors from soil obtained sifting the leaf litter on clay soil, of an olive grove in March, at 200–300 meters. Numerous and repeated research at same locality, in the same or in other seasons gave negative results.
Main soil type. Chromic-Cambisol (European Soil Data Centre; Panagos et al. 2012).
Reproduction. Probably parthenogenetic. Species known from five females.
Chorological relationships. Sympatric with Pseudomeira solarii Péricart (1963) and Dolichomeira sp.
