Daidalotarsonemus costulatus Mahunka, 1972

Daidalotarsonemus costulatus Mahunka, 1972: 89 ; Lindquist, 1986: 320; Lin & Zhang, 2002: 58.

Diagnosis. Female: Gnathosoma : Palpal length about 1/4 length of gnathosoma. Dorsum: Irregular ornamentation on prodorsum. Tergite C with coarse reticulation grouped between setae c1 (poorly visible due to slide condition). Tergite D with coarse reticulation grouped anteriad setae d. Setae v1, sc2, c1 and c2 unmodified in shape. Setae v1 as long as sc2 (~ 30). Setae c1 shorter than c2 (~ 19 and ~ 25, respectively). Setae c1 inserted near midlength of tergite C. Setae d, e, f and h leaf-shaped. Setae d and f identical in shape (ensiform), but different in length (~ 43 and ~ 34, respectively) and width (~ 8 and ~ 6, respectively). Setae e elliptical in shape, shorter than d and f, but as long as h (~ 24). Setae f ~11 distant from each other, on rounded tubercles. Setae h lanceolate in shape. Venter: Tegula truncate, slightly arched posteriorly. Apodemes distinct, except for poststernal apodeme (poorly visible due to slide condition). Apodemes 2 not fused to prosternal apodeme. Legs: sensory cluster of tibiotarsus I complete. Seta tc” of tarsus II serrate. Male & larva: unknown.

Redescription:

Gnathosoma : ovate in ventral view, length 32, maximum width 25. Setae dgs 12 and vgs 8 smooth; palps length 9, with two small subterminal setae and terminal projections. Pharynx length 18, maximum width 7.

Idiosoma—dorsum: length 220, width at level of c1 119. Prodorsal shield with coarse ornamentation. Stigmata located near lateral notches of prodorsal shield, equidistant to v1 and sc2 setal bases. Setae sc1 inserted posterior to sc2. Tergite C reticulate between setae c1 (poorly discernible due to slide condition). Tergite D with coarse reticulation. Lengths of setae: v1 30, sc1 14, sc2 29, c1 19, c2 25, d 43, e 24, f 34 and h 23. Maximum widths of expanded setae: d 8, e 16, f 6 and h 12. All dorsal setae serrate; except sc2, c1 and c2 smooth. Setae v1, sc2, c1 and c2 slender; d and f ensiform; e elliptical with two veins; h lanceolate. Distances between dorsal setae: v1–v1 25, sc2–sc2 49, v1–sc2 29, c1–c1 46, c2–c2 91, c1–c2 41, d–d 38, f–f 11, e–f 11 and h–h 12.

Idiosoma—venter: setae 1a 7 (7–8); 2a 9; 3a 19 near anteromedial margins of apodemes 3; 3b 16 on posterior ends of apodemes 4. Apodemes 1 conspicuous, fused to anterior end of prosternal apodeme. Apodeme 2 short and not fused to prosternal apodeme. Prosternal apodeme conspicuous from junction with apodeme 1 to apodemes 2 and inconspicuous from that point to sejugal apodeme. Sejugal apodeme uninterrupted. Apodeme 3 extending diagonally from proximity of base of seta 3a to anterior margin of trochanter III. Apodeme 4 not entirely seen (poorly visible due to slide condition). Poststernal apodeme not entirely seen (poorly visible due to slide condition). Tegula 16 wide, 6 long; posterior margin slightly arched. Setae ps 8 serrate.

Legs: Lengths: leg I 41, leg II 36, leg III 84. Number of setae: leg I: 3-4-6(2)+7(1), leg II: 3-4-4-4(1), leg III: 1+2-4-4. Tarsal solenidion ω of tibiotarsus I 6, stout, wider medially. Sensory cluster of tibiotarsus I complete, solenidion φ1 3, slender, capitate; solenidion φ2 4, robust, slightly capitate; famulus k 6; all inserted at approximately same level. Seta d of tibiotarsus I 18, serrate. Solenidion ω of tarsus II length 5. Seta d of tibia II 13, serrate. Femorogenu IV 14; tibiotarsus IV 9. Length of leg IV setae: v’ F 10, v’ G 21, v’ Ti 26 and tc” 40; all setae smooth; v’ Ti tapered.

Type material deposition: holotype ♀ deposited at HNHM .

Locality: Baiyer River Sanctuary, Western Highlands Province, Papua-New Guinea ( Mahunka 1972).
