(3) Meisch et al. (2019a) followed Martens & Behen (1994) in considering Cypricercus episphaena a synonym of C. acanthigera . However, this decision involved only the American specimens identified as C. episphaena by Tressler (1950), and which in fact belong in C. acanthigera , not the African species named by G.W. Müller (1908).

The original C. episphaena

was re-instated as a valid species by Almeida et al. (2021a) and this decision is followed here.
