Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804
Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804: 283 . – Type locality. Not given.—Onomatophore: Holotype: deposited in the “Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg” (Strasbourg, France) but now lost (M.-D. Wandhammer, in litt., February 2009).
Status. Not a member of the Xenochrophis piscator -complex, this taxon should be removed from the synonymy of Tropidonotus umbratus and other synonyms of X. piscator .
Comments. Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) regarded this species as a synonym of Tropidonotus umbratus ( Daudin, 1803) . However, the description of the holotype of Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804 shows that this taxon is not referable to the genus Xenochrophis . Furthermore, both Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) mentioned another taxon, supposedly described by Herrmann (1804), C. brunneus . We could not find any mention of this taxon in Herrmann’s book, and we cannot comment on its status.
