26. Cnidoscolus cnicodendron Griseb., Abh. Königl. Ges. Wiss. Göttingen View in CoL 24: 53 (1879).— Jatropha vitifolia var.
cnicodendron (Griseb.) Pax, Pflanzenr. IV , 147 I (Heft 42): 88 (1910).— Cnidoscolus vitifolius var. cnicodendrum
(Griseb.) Lourteig & O´Donell, Lilloa 9: 116 (1943). Type:— ARGENTINA. Salta: Retala bei Orán, October 1873,
P. G. Lorentz & G. Hieronymus 355 (lectotype GOET-009568!, designated here; isolectotype CORD-00005953!) .
Jatropha vitifolia var. maritima Müll.Arg., Fl. Bras. View in CoL 11(2): 498 (1874). Type:— BRAZIL. In provinciis maritimis Brasiliae orientalis, April 1819 or 1820, C.F.P. von Martius s.n. (holotype M-0233234!).
Jatropha vitifolia var. grisebachii Pax, Pflanzenr. IV. View in CoL 147. I (Heft 42): 88 (1910). Type:— ARGENTINA. Salta: Rio Juramento , February 1873, P.G. Lorentz & G. Hieronymus 328 (lectotype GOET-009566!, designated here; isolectotypes CORD-00005955!, F-V 0056815F!, F-V0056814F!, GOET-009567!). The holotype in B was probably destroyed; here we designated the GOET specimen as lectotype .
Distribution:— Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay.
Notes:— In the protologue, Grisebach (1879) stated that this species had been collected at Orán and “fl. Juramento” [Río Juramento]. At GOET there are three specimens that represent original material: Lorentz & Hieronymus 328, Lorentz & Hieronymus 355, and Lorentz & Hieronymus 413. Pax (1910) treated this species a variety of Cnidoscolus vitifolius , [as Jatropha vitifolia ], and went so far as to separate the plants from Orán and the Río Juramento as distinct varieties, var. cnicodendron and var. grisebachii respectively. The latter was typified by Lorentz & Hieronymus 328. In order to maintain Pax’s intention of restricting his var. cnicodendron to plants from Orán, we here designate as lectotype Lorentz & Hieronymus 355 (GOET). It is chosen because the specimen has flowers and a portion of a fruit, whereas Lorentz & Hieronymus 413 is sterile. Fernández Casas (2007e) treated this species as Cnidoscolus vitifolius var. cnicodendrum (Griseb.) Lourteig & O´Donell.
