Chilon robustus Sørensen, 1896: 190 View in CoL (unjustified synonymization by Starǫga, 1992).
Material studied. 31 33 & ƤƤ syntypes of Chilon undulatus ( NHRS): Kamerun, W. Sjöstedt leg., 1891.
Descriptive notes ( Figs 44–47 View FIGURES 36 – 47 ). Penis length, 1.5. Penis stalk dorso-ventrally widened at the distal end, and connected to the penial head by a narrowed neck reinforced by a dorsal keel. Penial head disc-shaped, clearly broader than long, with a median notch in distal margin, divided into two latero-distal setose incrassate bulges enclosing the glans. Sides of penis head with translucent keels. Ventral side with three pairs of small setae, two of them (the outer one shorter) pointing toward the median notch, and the third one situated on the lateral bulges and pointing laterad. Lateral side with three pairs of large proximad-directed foliate setae and with a basal keel. Dorsal side with three pairs of small setae, two apical ones pointing distad and the third, sitting on lateral bulges, pointing posteriad and flanking the glans. Glans, see Fig. 46 View FIGURES 36 – 47 .
Remarks. Staręga (1992) synonymised Chilon undulatus with C. robustus on the basis of penial morphology but his decision was not documented by drawings. In the NHMS samples there are no male syntypes with their penises removed and therefore only external morphology was studied or the removed penises were carefully placed back in the opisthosoma. In the latter case, a superficial penial similarity between the two species could have been the reason for that spurious synonymy.
