Status at New Ireland. Originally described from New Ireland as Serranus erythraeus by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1830b: 516), based on MNHN 7346 (holotype); subsequently reported from Lihir Group , Namatamai District , New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island , off eastern New Hanover , 3–25 m depth, St. KR 90, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll, Line Islands and Pitcairn Group, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia, Tonga and Rapa. Found in coral reefs including lagoon habitats, 1–60 m depth. Marine.
