Centris (Paracentris) foxi Friese, 1901 View in CoL nom. rev.
( Figures 19‒22 View FIGURES 19–22 )
Centris atriventris Fox, 1899 View in CoL . 68, 69 (junior primary homonym of C. atriventris Mocsáry, 1896 View in CoL ).
Centris foxi Friese, 1901 View in CoL . 350 (nom. nov. for C. atriventris Fox, 1899 View in CoL ).
Type data: The female and the two male specimens used by Fox (1899) to describe this species were found and studied at ANSP. All primary types are conspecific and the female is in better condition than the males. This specimen is the only with original Fox’s identification label and it is here designated as the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19–22 ): Tex. [printed]\ Centris atriventris Fox [handwritten]\ [red label] type [printed] series 3 specimens [handwritten with blue ink]\ [light blue label] Lectotype Centris atriventris Fox, 1899 des. F. Vivallo, 2017 [printed]. Paralectotype male with the following data label: Tex. [printed]\ [light blue label] Paralectotype Centris atriventris Fox, 1899 des. F. Vivallo, 2017 [printed]. Paralectotype male with the following data label: Tex. [printed]\ garmata n. sp. [handwritten with pencil] [light blue label] Paralectotype Centris atriventris Fox, 1899 des. F. Vivallo, 2017 [printed].
Type locality: United States: Arizona state: Texas .
Centris atripes Mocsáry, 1899 View in CoL . 254. New junior synonym.
Type data: Lectotype male ( Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum , Budapest, Hungary HNHM, examined). Subsequent designation: Rasmussen & Vivallo (2014).
Type locality: Mexico: Sinaloa state: Presidio (“Praesidio”) .
Comments: When Fox (1899) described Centris atriventris he did not realize that this name had been used previously by Mocsáry (1896). To eliminate the homonymy, Friese (1901) proposed C. foxi a new name for the species described by Fox. In 1974, Snelling cited C. atriventris Fox as junior synonym of C. atripes , being this latter name currently used to recognize the species. Both C. atripes and C. atriventris were described in 1899, however, Mocsáry’s article was published on May 6 th, while that of Fox on April 18 th. This means that C. atripes corresponds to a junior synonym of C. atriventris and not vice versa. Since the name of Fox’s species is preoccupied, the valid name to recognize this species is C. foxi Friese, 1901 .
