Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 127. 1908): Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 1217.8 ( LINN; iso- UPS-KALM 27) .

Current name: Cenchrus tribuloides L. ( Poaceae ).

Note: Baum (in Canad. J. Bot. 45: 1851. 1967) attempted to reject Hitchcock’s choice of a Kalm specimen as type, arguing that it was ineligible because Linnaeus had not cited it explicitly. However, Linnaeus commonly omitted explicit reference to Kalm when North American taxa were also known to him from other (e.g. Clayton) collections, and the absence of a reference does not prevent appropriately annotated Kalm collections from being original material for such names.
