Diagnostic features
Thallus stocky. Cell II almost entirely blackened except for a small area below cells III and VI; this blackening spreads towards the dorsal margin of cell III. Cells I and II separated by a constricted septum; forming a geniculate stalk. Cell VI strongly constricted at the middle ( Fig. 75F View Fig , arrow). Antheridium occupying the side of the appendage basal cell ( Fig. 75F View Fig , an). Primary appendage unbranched. Remarks
First record from Denmark. Cantharomyces denigratus and C. italicus cannot be considered growth forms of the same species because there are no correlations with host sex and growing location.
