Caenosia octosignata Rondani, 1866 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 196 (key), 202 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus subapenninis [sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (abdomen glued to a cardboard stage pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / octomaculata [sic!] Rnd., Parma / 1290.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Coenosia octosignata View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 208, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 202) described Caenosia octosignata from just the male sex without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ Bis tantum marem legi [I collected the male twice]”. We consider the single specimen under the name “ octomaculata ” as a syntype for Caenosia octosignata because it fits the original description and the two words “ octosignata ” and “ octomaculata ” are synonyms (‘with eight spots’). Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43).
