Brickellia Elliott (1823: 290) View in CoL , nom. cons. Type:— Brickellia cordifolia Elliott.

1. Brickellia sect. Barroetea (A. Gray) E.E. Schill. & R. Scott , stat. nov. Barroetea Gray (1880: 29) . Type:— Barroetea setosa A. Gray (= Brickellia subuligera [S.Schauer] B.L.Turner).

Species:— Brickellia coixtlahuaca B.L. Turner ; B. huahuapana B.L. Turner ; B. jimenezii Hinojosa & Cruz Durán ; B. laxiflora (Brandegee) B.L. Turner ; B. pavonii (A. Gray) B.L. Turner ; B. sonorana B.L. Turner ; B. subuligera Schauer.

Geographic distribution:—The greatest diversity is in Oaxaca with two narrow endemics ( B. coixtlahuaca and B. huahuapana ) along with the “regional endemic”, B. laxiflora (Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz) as well as B. pavonii that is widespread throughout southcentral Mexico (Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Michoacan, Mexico, and Morelos). The sister taxa B. subuligera , a widespread species throughout the Central Plateau and B. sonorana , endemic to Sonora, southwest Chihuahua and parts of Sinaloa, have more northerly distributions. This section is phylogenetically close to B. sect. Leptanthodium, which contains the widespread, annual species B. diffusa and B. filipes , which share with several species of B. sect. Barroetea a distribution in low to mid-elevation, tropical deciduous forest habitats. Primarily of low to mid-elevations (0–1500 m). The two widespread species, B. pavonii and B. subuligera , extend to 2000+ m.

Phenology:—All flower in the fall (Sept–Nov [–Jan]).

Habitat:—Primarily found in dry, tropical deciduous forests, or barrancas along streams ( B. laxiflora ).

Endemism:—Widespread taxa are sister to narrow endemics ( B. subuligera B. sonorana ; B. pavonii B. huahuapana ; B. laxiflora B. coixtlahuaca ).

Morphological trends:—Annuals ( B. subuligera may be perennial) with setose leaves with prickles at tips, corollas funnelform, and cypselae with 2–6(–9) ribs.
