Etymology. The scientific name, fangchenglaiae is dedicated to Ms. Cheng-lai Fang (IZCAS, Beijing, P. R. China) who has contributed greatly to the fauna of Lithosiini of China in the 1980s–2000s.
Diagnosis. Barsine fangchenglaiae is very similar superficially to B. pretiosa belonging to another species complex, and can be distinguished by the genitalia structures only. Compared to that of B. pretiosa , the valva of B. fangchenglaiae is less narrowed subapically, its distal saccular process has lobes being narrow and more or less equal in length (whereas in B. pretiosa the dorsal lobe is strongly broadened basally and the distal lobe is more elongated, up to 2 times longer than that of B. fangchenglaiae ), the basal saccular process is slightly less elongated, and the medial costal process is slightly less elongated, with the tip being directed ventrally (whereas in B. pretiosa the tip is directed more distally). The vesica structure of the new species differs clearly from that of B. pretiosa by the much larger 1 st medial diverticulum having much larger lobes, the 2 nd medial diverticulum with inner lobe much smaller than the outer lobe or totally absent (those two lobes are nearly equal in length in B. pretiosa ), the cornuti on the outer lobe of 2 nd medial diverticulum much larger and triangular (those are much smaller and cylindrical in B. pretiosa ), the more elongated 3 rd medial diverticulum bearing slightly larger cornuti, the 4 th medial diverticulum lacking cornuti (in B. pretiosa that bears cornuti), and the slightly broader field of cornuti on the 5 th medial diverticulum. The female genitalia of B. fangchenglaiae differ clearly from those of B. pretiosa by the slightly more elongated ductus bursae, the corpus bursae being scattered with numerous spinules anteriorly (spinules are absent in B. pretiosa ), the much broader posterior sclerotized area of corpus bursae and the absence of signa (in B. pretiosa the corpus bursae bears two signa).
Description. ♂. Forewing length 16–20 mm, average length 18.2 mm. Antenna ciliate, dorsally with base orange and remaining part yellowish brown. Head orange. Thorax orange, covered by orange long hairy scales dorsally. Tegula orange, with a blackish brown dot centrally. Abdomen covered by pinkish long hairy scales dorsally and ventrally. Upperside of forewing ground color dull deep yellow, with bright orange and blackish brown patterns. Subbasal spot dot-like, antemedial fascia varying from broad and prominent to narrow and obsolete, shifting outwards at discoidal cell, in some individuals antemedial fascia touching medial fascia; medial fascia slightly shifting outwards at discoidal cell; postmedial fascia broad and curving outwards medially; the remaining part of the wing with blackish brown streaks of various length extending along veins; cilia orange. Hindwing upperside ground color pale pink from base to median zone and becoming darker from apex to anal angle, without any maculation; cilia pink. ♀. Forewing length 21–25 mm, average length 23.3 mm (n=6). Antenna ciliate, dorsally with basal one-third and distal one-third light orange and the remaining part blackish brown. Head, thorax, tegula and abdomen as in ♂. Forewing upperside ground color, patterns and cilia same as ♂. Hindwing same as ♂.
Genitalia. ♂. Uncus long, slender and curved subapically, with sharp apex. Tegumen triangular, short and broad. Juxta broad X-shaped. Saccus broad, U-shaped. Valva broad, varying in width at distal section; costa strongly sclerotized, medial costal process broadly triangular; apical lobe of valva broad, basal saccular process long and sclerotized; distal saccular process rather short and narrow, gradually tapering to the apex; dorsal lobe of distal saccular process varying in width, length and bending degree, with apex sharp or rounded; aedeagus long and broad; vesica broad, basal diverticulum small and short; 1 st medial diverticulum large, slightly bilobate, the main lobe long and broad, additional lobe short and robust; 2 nd medial diverticulum long and bilobate, outer lobe long, broad and cone-shaped, covered by cornuti of different sizes from base to subapical zone, inner lobe short and triangular, covered by small granulation thoroughly; 3 rd medial diverticulum long and broad, covered by cornuti of different sizes thoroughly; 4 th medial diverticulum very small, without any cornuti on the surface; 5 th medial diverticulum globular, covered by numerous cornuti of various sizes; basal plate of vesica ejaculatorius long and broad, triangular, situated between 3 rd and 4 th medial diverticulum.
♀. Papilla analis rectangular; apophysis posterioris and anterioris long and slender, sclerotized, the former slightly longer than the latter; antrum broad, with several broad longitudinal folds; ductus bursae moderately long and broad, sclerotized; corpus bursae large and globular, posterior and medial section strongly sclerotized, with outer edge covered by a broad band of spinules; appendix bursae strongly sclerotized and cone-shaped, its surface covered by strong granulation.
Remarks. 1. Like some other species of Barsine , B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. is characterized by external and genital variability. Externally, the new species slightly varies in size and forewing width. In addition, in some specimens dark pattern elements may be rather diffuse ( Figs 5–6 View FIGURES 1–8 ). In the male genitalia, the length of a medial costal process, the length of lobes of a distal saccular process, the width of a distal membranous lobe of valva, and the length of a 3 rd medial diverticulum of aedeagus vesica are variable. However, male genitalia of the new species display a number of constant features, which allows separate it easily from the externally similar B. pretiosa (see the ‘Diagnosis’ chapter above). 2. Despite the external similarity to B. pretiosa , B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. is the closest relative of B. mactans . Externally, the new species can be easily distinguished from B. mactans by its larger size, more elongated forewing, orange pattern elements (scarlet in B. mactans ) and shorter postmedial longitudinal dark streaks. In the male genital capsule, B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. differs from B. mactans by the more elongated juxta with longer basal processes; the more broadened valva; the medial costal process having a narrower base and a more elongated tip; the more elongated distal saccular process; and the more broadened distal saccular process with a weaker dorsal lobe. The aedeagus vesica structures of the two species have similar ground plan, but in B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. the subbasal diverticulum is presented; the 2 nd medial diverticulum is more broadened, has a small subdiverticulum subbasally and bears more robust cornuti; the 3 rd medial diverticulum is broader and more elongated and bears more numerous and robust cornuti; the 4 th medial diverticulum is smaller and membranous (bears several small cornuti in B. mactans ); and the basal plate of vesica ejaculatorius is more broadened basally. 3. Barsine fangchenglaiae sp. nov. resembles superficially B. flammealis also, which is closely related to B. pretiosa , but can be easily distinguished from it by the orange pattern elements (scarlet in B. flammealis ) and the shorter postmedial longitudinal dark streaks. The main differences in male genitalia of the two species are the same as listed in comparison with B. pretiosa in the ‘Diagnosis’ chapter. 4. Barsine fangchenglaiae sp. nov. is also somewhat similar to B. defecta externally, but it can be easily distinguished from the latter by the following combination of characters: 1) in B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. the forewing ground color is deeper yellow and the medial line shifts outwardly in the discoidal cell, while in B. defecta the forewing ground color is paler yellow and the median line is nearly straight; 2) in the ♂ genital capsule of the new species both distal saccular process and basal saccular process are shorter and narrower than those of B. defecta , in which both processes are longer and thicker; 3) in B. fangchenglaiae sp. nov. the outer lobe of the 2 nd medial diverticulum is triangular and much larger than that of B. defecta and bears distinctly shorter cornuti, whereas in B. defecta the cornuti on the outer lobe of the 2 nd medial diverticulum are cylindrical and much smaller.
Distribution. The new species is to date, known to occur in SW China (Yunnan, Sichuan and Xizang Provinces), N Thailand (Chiang Mai and Nan Provinces) and N Vietnam (Hòa Bình, Lào Cai and Phú Tho Provinces).
