This species was recently redescribed by Jennings et al. (2004), from South Australia. In addition to their redescription this species lacks the ovipositor guide on the hind coxa.

Aulacus moerens is one of several species ( A. flavimanus , A. brabyi , and A. flavicornis ) that have the mesosoma angular in lateral view, an ovate metasoma, and which lack a spot on the apex of the fore wing and punctures on the face. All of these species are black or largely black, but A. moerens can be distinguished from the others as it has a rugulose (i.e., finely wrinkled) face whereas the other species have a rugose (i.e., coarsely wrinkled) face.
