Atelopus carbonerensis Rivero, 1972 View in CoL *

Holotype: BM 1968 .940.

Type locality: “ La Carbonera (San Eusebio), 2,330 m, Estado Mérida, Venezuela.”

Distribution: Region 1. Páramo el Tambor; surroundings of the type locality.

Remarks: Considered the most endangered species of the genus in Venezuela, probably extinct (Rueda-Almonacid et al. 2005). The last sighting of a live specimen was in 1998 ( Torres and Barrio-Amorós 2001). La Carbonera has been extensively deforested and used as pasture land, and little original cloud forest remains in the Sierra de la Culata National Park. Recent sightings (as recent as 2016) have not been proven, and must be verified.
