Diagnosis. Aspicera suecica has sharp longitudinal carinae on occiput, sharp transverse carinae on lateral surface of pronotum, scutellar disc convex in lateral view, notauli weakly carinate transversely and scutum sometimes with weak and short transverse carinae. This species is similar to A. scutellata and A. blancae , but these species have notauli sharply carinate transversely and noticeable rugose carinae on scutum.
Redescription
Length. Females 3.9–5.1 mm.; male 3.7 mm.
Coloration. Very variable. Head usually black, sometimes reddish dark brown. Antennae medium to dark brown. Aspicera effincta type: head, mesosoma and metasoma black, scape and pedicellum dark brown, basal half of F1 dark brown, dorsal half of F1 and remaining flagellomeres light brown. Femur and coxa medium brown, remaining leg segments light brown. Wing veins medium brown.
Head. Frons coriaceous, weakly rugose near ocelli. Lateral frontal carinae slightly curved. Area between compound eye and lateral frontal carinae with transverse carinae. Gena in lateral view rounded, not expanded, coriaceous and transversely carinate. Vertex not incised, coriaceous, rugose. Ocelli slightly prominent. Occiput coriaceous, with conspicuous transverse carinae on basal 2/3, rugose or longitudinally carinate dorsally.
Antenna. FEMALE. Filiform. Antennal formula: 9(6.5): 4(5): 12(5): 11.5(5): 11(5): 11(5): 10(5): 10(5.): 9.5(5.): 9(5): 9(5): 8.5(5): 18(5). MALE. Filiform. F1 sharply excavated. Antennal formula: 8(6): 4(5): 13(5): 10(5): 10(5): 10(5): 10(5): 10(5): 9(4.5): 9(4.5): 9(4.5): 9(4.5): 9(4.5): 14(4).
Mesosoma. Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous, with weak to sharp transverse carinae. Subpronotal plate not projected, dorsal margin pubescent. Scutum coriaceous, with punctate sculpture on lateral areas, sometimes with weak and short transverse carinae. Lateral line conspicuous, complete. Antero-admedian lines alutaceous, reaching 1/3 scutum length, parallel; median ridge alutaceous, sharp. Notauli and median mesoscutal sulcus very variable, some specimens with effaced transverse carinae, other specimens weak and sharp transverse carinae together. Area between notauli not prominent or slightly prominent in lateral view. Parascutal sulcus ending near anterior end of notauli, smooth, weakly pubescent anteriorly. Mesopleuron alutaceous with piliferous points and oblique carinae on ventral area and anterior 1/3, smooth on dorsoposterior area. Scutellum 0.95–1.1 times scutum length, emarginate on posterior half. Scutellar foveae smooth, scutellar pits shallow. Interfoveal carina conspicuous continuing to last 1/3 of scutellar spine at least. Scutellar disc coriaceous, with conspicuous longitudinal carinae, swollen posterior to scutellar foveae, slightly sloping towards basis of scutellar spine in lateral view. Scutellar spine 0.65–0.75 times length of scutellar disc, rather narrow, striate longitudinally, straight in lateral view. MALE. Scutellum 0.95–1.1 times scutum length. Scutellar spine 0.6–0.9 times length of scutellar disc.
Wing. Wing membrane hyaline, in large specimens slightly smoked. Radial cell 2.0–2.5 longer than wide. Wing pubescence slightly reduced. Marginal pubescence short but dense. R1 long. R2 slightly curved. Rs+M absent.
Biology. Unknown.
Distribution. Western and Central Palaeartic: Sweden ( Dahlbom, 1842; DallaTorre & Kieffer, 1910) and Turkmenistan ( Belizin, 1952); here recorded from Spain.
Comments. Dahlbom (1842: 8–10) determined some specimens as O. ediogaster ( Rossi, 1790) and O. bicolor ( Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1832) . Kieffer (1901) and Dalla Torre & Kieffer (1910) considered, erroneously, these determinations as new species. For this, these authors proposed new names for this material: Aspicera dahlbomi Kieffer, 1901 was proposed for Onychia ediogaster from Dahlbom and Aspicera suecica Dalla Torre & Kieffer, 1910 for Onychia bicolor from Dahlbom. According to articles 12.1, 12.2, 49 y 72.7 of the IZNC, the name Aspicera dahlbomi Kieffer, 1901 is not available because it is a replacement name for a misidentification ( ediogaster Dahlbom nec Rossi) and unavailable names cannot be replaced; they have to be describe as new species. Kieffer (1901: 158) gave no description of A. dahlbomi and also gave not any reference to any description, then ‘dahlbomi’ is not available and A. dahlbomi is not a valid species. Aspicera suecica Dalla Torre & Kieffer, 1910 is available because it is correctly described as a new species ( Dalla Torre & Kieffer 1910: 54), and includes the misidentification of Onychia bicolor from Dahlbom (an unavailable name). Kieffer (1901) and Dalla Torre & Kieffer (1910) are not the only cynipidologists considering erroneously that Dahlbom described new species; in this way, “ Onychia ediogaster Dahlbom ” was erroneously considered as a synonymy of Cynips ediogaster Panzer by Giraud (1860: 158) and Giraud (1856: 186) also considered erroneously “ Onychia bicolor Dahlbom ” as a synonymy of Onychia scutellata (Villers) .
