Aspicera marginata Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar n. sp.

( Figs 25a & b View FIGURE 25 )

Type material: ( 1♀). HOLOTYPE female ( CNCI) 3/VII/1961, Large Delta , Alaska, USA, W. R. M. Mason leg.

Diagnosis. Aspicera marginata belongs to the group of species with prominent interfoveal carina and lateral surface of pronotum lacking sharp transverse carinae. Aspicera marginata has some unique scutellar characters: scutellum extremely flat, wide, with very large scutellar foveae and sharply prominent circumscutellar carina.

Description

Length. Female 3.6 mm.; male unknown.

Coloration. Head, mesosoma and metasoma black. Leg and antenna medium brown.

Head. Frons coriaceous, weakly punctate. Lateral frontal carinae curved. Area between compound eye and lateral frontal carinae without transverse carinae. Gena in lateral view rounded, slightly expanded, coriaceous, with sharp transverse carinae. Vertex not incised, coriaceous, punctate. Ocelli weakly prominent. Occiput coriaceous, without carinae.

Antenna. Weakly subclavate. Antennal formula: 10(7.5): 3.5(5): 12(4.5): 9(5): 9(5): 10(5): 9(5): 9(5): 9.5(5): 8.5(5): 8.5(5): 8(5): 16(5).

Mesosoma. Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous. Subpronotal plate not projected, dorsal margin glabrous. Scutum coriaceous, with small transverse carinae. Lateral line incomplete, conspicuous on ventral half. Antero-admedian lines sharp, prominent, reaching 1/3–1/2 scutum length, parallel; median ridge prominent. Notauli wide, smooth, with weak transverse carinae, median mesoscutal furrow smooth. Area between notauli quite prominent in lateral view. Parascutal sulcus ending near anterior end of notauli, glabrous, alutaceous. Mesopleuron with oblique carinae and coriaceous basally and on anterior 1/3, smooth on posterodorsal 2/3. Scutellum as long as scutum, entirely emarginate. Scutellar foveae smooth, deep and large, scutellar pits shallow. Interfoveal carina sharply prominent, noticeable in lateral view, continuing along scutellar disc to beginning of scutellar spine, which is thin. Scutellar disc flat, coriaceous, weakly rugose, slightly sloping towards the basis of scutellar spine in lateral view. Scutellar spine 0.5 times length of scutellar disc, narrow, coriaceous/alutaceous, straight in lateral view.

Wing. Wing membrane slightly smoked near veins. Radial cell 2.10 times longer than wide. Wing pubescence reduced. Marginal pubescence absent. R1 long. R2 straight, with a small curvature near margin of wing. Rs+M absent.

Derivatio nominis. The specific name refers to the scutellum of this species, which is sharply emarginate.

Biology. Unknown.

Distribution. Nearctic: USA (Alaska).
