Type material. Holotype: specimen illustrated in Csepreghy-Meznerics (1956: pl. 8, figs 11–14), SL: 28.2 mm, MD: 9.0 mm, Szob ( Hungary). Boda (1964) listed the holotype of this species in his type catalogue but did not provide an inventory number. This means that the specimen was already lost at that time. It was probably lost in 1956, when 80% of the paleontological collection was lost in the fire after a Russian tank shot into the building of the Hungarian National Museum, where the Paleontological Department was at that time (pers. comm. Alfréd Dulai, 27.11.2023).
Revised description. Medium sized, very slender fusiform of about ten teleoconch whorls, apical angle 18°. Protoconch unknown. Spire very high. Early teleoconch whorls weakly convex; later whorls strongly convex with weakly concave subsutural ramp, periphery slightly above mid-whorl and deeply incised suture. Sculpture of about ten spiral cords, separated by interspaces of about same width, with one delicate secondary cord intercalated, overriding broad, prominent axial ribs; eight axial ribs on last whorl. Axial ribs fading on subsutural ramp, most prominent along periphery. Last whorl only partly preserved. Preserved part of aperture moderately narrow, with straight columella. No information on siphonal canal available.
Discussion. Ariefusus szobiensis ( Strausz, 1962) is a poorly known species, based on a single, fragmentary specimen. Vermeij & Snyder (2018: 68) provisionally included it in Ariefusus , which is followed herein. The whorl profile of A. szobiensis with the periphery placed slightly above mid-whorl and deeply incised suture is highly reminiscent of the extant type species Ariefusus rutilus ( Nicolay & Berthelot, 1996) . They differ mainly in the even slenderer spire of the Paratethyan species. Ariefusus szobiensis was established as subspecies of Snyderifusus prevosti (Hörnes, 1853) by Strausz (1962). They differ very clearly in the slender spire and prominent axial ribs of Ariefusus szobiensis and are obviously unrelated.
The extant Ariefusus rutilus is distributed along the coasts of western Africa. Therefore, Ariefusus szobiensis indicates a connection to the tropical eastern Atlantic faunas.
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic (own data, M.H.).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Pannonian Basin: Szob ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966).
