Host plant: Rhododendron macrosepalum Maximowicz (Ericaceae) (Moriuti 1968).
Distribution. China (Guizhou, Hubei, Zhejiang), Japan.
Diagnosis. This species is similar to A. (A.) alpha and A. (A.) taiwanensis in having a short broad white dorsal band on the forewing, a white dorsal spot beyond the middle of the wing, and a dark dorsal spot before the middle of the wing (between the preceeding white band and spot). Argyresthia (A.) beta can be separated from the latter two species by the forewing having a triangular white dorsal spot beyond the middle of the wing, which is subtrapezoidal in the latter two species. In the male genitalia of A. (A.) beta the phallus is 3.8 times as long as the width of the valva ( Figs. 134 View FIGURES 132 – 137 , 190 View FIGURES 190 – 193 ), whereas it is 7.0 times as long as the width of the valva in A. (A.) alpha ( Figs. 133 View FIGURES 132 – 137 , 189 View FIGURES 185 – 189 ) and 2.8 in A. (A.) taiwanensis . Argyresthia (A.) alpha can be further separated from A. (A.) taiwanensis by the forewing having a quadrate golden-brown dorsal spot before the middle of the wing, which extends obliquely outward in the latter species.
