Arenaria tenuifolia var. vaillantiana Seringe View in CoL
Seringe (1824: 405−406) accepted Arenaria tenuifolia and recognized five varieties of which two, var. vaillantiana , and var. simpliciuscula , were new, while the other three represented new combinations: var. barrelieri (based on A. barrelieri Villars, 1789: 63 ), var. hybrida (based on A. hybrida Villars 1779: 48 ), and var. viscidula (based on A. viscidula Thuillier 1719: 219 ). The var. vaillantiana was dedicated to S. Vaillant, who listed the taxon in his Botanicon Parisiense ( Vaillant 1727: 7) citing the “ Alsine tenuifolia ” phrase recognized by Bauhin & Cherler (1651: 364). Seringe (1824: 406, as “ t. 3. f. I ”) also cited the Vaillant (l.c.) iconography (“ planche 3. Fig. 1 ”); clearly these latter item represents original material for var. vaillantiana . The Vaillant image shows one plant plus magnification of two flowers (“ a ”, and “ b ” on the plate) whose features correspond to Seringe’s description. Thus, this iconography is hereby designated as the lectotype of A. tenuifolia var. vaillantiana (see below).
