Anthracomya geneji Rondani, 1856

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 87.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but later (1862d: 148) added “ in alpibus pedemontanis [Piedmont ( Italy) Alps ]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Morinia melanoptera (Fallén, 1816) (Herting 1993: 104, Pape et al. 1995: 10).

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 87) key for the genus Anthracomya Rondani, 1856 lists Anthracomya geneji as its type species, and provides specific characters for the male and female but no detailed description, type locality or number of specimens. He later ( Rondani 1862d: 232) redescribed both sexes, as “ genéi ” in his key (p. 147) and description (p.148) and as “ genej ” in the index (p. 232), from material received from G. Genè. The subsequent spelling “ genei ” has been used ( Bezzi & Stein 1907: 403, Herting 1961: 8, Herting 1993: 104) but it is not in prevailing usage ( Pape 1989: 355, Rognes 1991c: 209, O’Hara et al. 2011: 209). Therefore, the original spelling “ geneji ” is to be used and “ genei ” is an incorrect subsequent spelling. We could not locate any type specimens of this nominal species in our study.
