Antherophagus ruficornis Grouvelle, 1919 ( Figs. 17–20 View Figs )
Antherophagus ruficornis Grouvelle 1919: 183 ; Blackwelder 1945: 429; Arnett 1975: 4; Bousquet 1989: 13; Leschen 1999: 553.
Diagnosis. Length 4–5 mm; overall coloration uniformly yellow with darker margins of femur and antennal insertions ( Figs. 17–20 View Figs ); with yellowish pubescence; clypeal notch of male widely open anteriorly, pointed posteriorly, broadening greatly near mandibles, not enclosing half of a circle ( Fig. 18 View Figs ). Female with clypeus emarginate ( Fig. 20 View Figs ).
Material Examined. Mexico Records: 1- Truqui; Mexico / Fry Coll.; 1905.100./ MTEC 147029 View Materials / Holotype ( BMNH). 1- Truqui ; Mexico / Fry Coll.; 1905.100./ MTEC 147029 View Materials ( BMNH). 1- Ciudad , Mex., 8100 ft. Forrer / MTEC 147030 View Materials ( BMNH).
Range. MEXICO: Mexico.
Additional Remarks. This species is often erroneously given a range which includes Turkey. The likely origin of this confusion is the holotype of this species collected in Mexico which bears a label reading “Truqui”, the name of the Italian collector Eugenio Truqui (?–1860) ( Conci and Poggi 1996) .
Females of this species have an emarginate clypeus ( Fig. 20 View Figs ) which somewhat resembles the clypeal notch of males ( Fig. 18 View Figs ) but is less deeply impressed. This may lead to confusion when sexing individuals of this species; however, males and females can still be reliably distinguished by the differing tarsal formulae (5-5- 5 in females, 5-5- 4 in males).
