Anthaxomorphus papuanus Deyrolle, 1864 View in CoL
( Figs. 3, 5 View FIGURES 1–6 )
Anthaxomorphus papuanus Deyrolle, 1864: 221 View in CoL .
Type locality: New Guinea .
This species was described from one specimen (holotype in MNHN, sex unknown) labelled “N. Guinée ” .
During our trip to the eastern Indonesia (xii.2006 – i.2007) we collected about 20 specimens of A. papuanus on the leaves of Ficus wassa Thouras (Moraceae) and we observed many specimens flying around this small tree. Specimens sitting on leaves partly flew and partly jumped off when they were disturbed. We also found old, empty mines in the same leaves ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7–10 ). This species was also collected and reared from the leaves of the same host plant and from related species F.copiosa Steud. near Madang ( PNG) by the staff of the Madang Ecology Project. In 1998 I collected on the Maluku Islands (Seram, Elamata, 600m, 23.x.1998) two specimens of A. oblongus by shaking of sunexposed branches of Ficus sp. These observations confirm Bellamy´s data ( Bellamy, 1987); he supposed Ficus spp. to be host plants of the genus Anthaxomorphus (he recorded the rearing of two African species from leaves of Ficus sp. ).
Specimens studied. Holotype ( MNHN); Indonesia, Papua Prov., Biak, Adidakam, 23.–26.xii.2006, 00 o 57'71S 135 o 47'63 E, Sv. Bílý leg. (10 males, 11 females, NMPC); New Guinea N, Sentani Lk – 300m, March 1992, leg. Jiří Kolibáč (1 male, 1 female, TICB); Papua New Guinea, Madang Province, Kibara, Ohu Village , various data (31.xii.2003 – 14.iv.2004), B. Isua, S. San, E. Brus, K. Molem, R. Lilip leg., reared from Ficus wassa and F.copiosa (20 males, 22 females, USNM, NMPC).
