Anhangatermes juruena Oliveira & Constantino , new species
Holotype: soldier, part of lot DZUB-3439, 06.vii.2002, collected by Reginaldo Constantino. Type repository: Dept. of Zoology, University of Brasília.
Type-locality: BRAZIL. State of Mato Grosso. Juruena , lat 10.3594S long 58.4903W, elevation 240 m. Paratypes: 15 soldiers and 20 workers, same data as holotype (DZUB-3439). Etymology. From the name of the type-locality, Juruena , a city in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, combined
as a noun in apposition.
Imago. Unknown.
Soldier ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 C, 6C, 6D, 9C). Head capsule yellow; nasus darker. Antennae and thoracic nota yellow. Legs yellowish. Tergites and sternites hyaline. Head capsule with 2 bristles on vertex and many microscopic hairs, more numerous on vertex and frons; some specimens with a short bristle near base of nasus; clypeus without bristles. Apical 1/6 of nasus densely covered with short inclined hairs, which become longer toward apex; 4 longer hairs at tip. Pro-, meso- and metanotum without bristles; with numerous microscopic hairs. Pronotum with a few short hairs on anterior margin ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 C). Tergites with a row of 4 bristles on posterior margin; surface of tergites with numerous microscopic hairs. Sternites with a row of long bristles on posterior margin; surface with dense inclined hairs of variable length. Head capsule slightly angular from dorsal view ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C); sides converging posteriorly. Mandibles angular, without sharp points ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 C). Nasus long, subcylindrical and slightly upturned ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 D). Pronotum with anterior margin convex, not emarginate. Relative length of antennal articles: 3>6>5=2>4. Worker ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 D, 10C). Head capsule and postclypeus yellowish. Postclypeus strongly inflated. Epicranial suture and fontanelle spot inconspicuous. Antennae with basal articles whitish, becoming light yellow towards apex. Thoracic nota, legs and abdomen whitish. Head capsule with about 20 bristles of variable size ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 C) and many microscopic hairs; postclypeus with many bristles and hairs of variable size. Pro-, meso- and metanota with many bristles on margins and numerous microscopic hairs on surface. Tergites with a irregular row of 12 or more bristles of variable size on posterior margin, and a second, similar row near middle; surface of tergites with sparse hairs, about half the length of bristles. Pilosity of sternites similar to that of soldier. Enteric valve armature elongate, with 3 major plates alternating with 3 minor plates ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D); minor plates narrower a little shorter. Length of major plates about 0.3 mm and of minor plates about 0.2 mm. All plates covered with relatively large conical spines orientated in direction of food movement; posterior end of each plate with a line of perpendicular spines. Comparisons. The soldier of A. macarthuri is very similar in all measurements, shape of head and pilosity, with the following differences: head capsule with sides evenly convex, not angular; mandibles with sharp points; no short hairs on anterior margin of pronotum. The worker of A. juruena , sp. n. has many more bristles on the head capsule than those of A. eurycephalus , sp. n. and A. macarthuri , and a distinct enteric valve. The worker is similar to those of A. anhanguera , sp. n. and A. pilosus , sp. n., with small differences in pilosity and in the shape of the enteric valve.
Habitat. The specimens were collected from the topsoil under a thick litter layer, in a teak plantation.
