Description. Fixed specimens whitish. Largest specimen with 134 chaetigers, 50 mm length and 0.26 mm width (MNRJP-002707). Body dorsoventrally flattened, ventral and dorsal surfaces papillate ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–D). Prostomium small with two lateral antennae anteriorly located to median antenna. Median antenna on the posterior region of prostomium, hidden by peristomium, and half the length of lateral antennae ( Fig. 4B, C View FIGURE 4 ). Two deep-set eyes anterior to median antenna ( Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ). Two biarticulated palps, palpophore large and palpostyle diminutive. Proboscis not observed. Peristomium indistinctly set off from prostomium, with two pairs of tentacular cirri of similar length and 1.4x longer than lateral antennae ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ). Parapodia biramous ( Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ). Dorsal and ventral parapodial cirri of similar length, and becoming progressively shorter from middle to posterior region. Ventral cirri from third to last chaetiger. Notopodial hooks present from third to last chaetiger ( Fig. 4A, D View FIGURE 4 ). Neuropodial lobes tapered with four simple and long bidentate chaetae, some chaetae with serrated tips. Pygidium tapered with two cirri covered by papillae ( Fig. 4E View FIGURE 4 ).

Distribution. Atlantic Ocean—USA, Maryland ( Pettibone 1966), Gulf of Mexico, Off Florida and Texas ( Wolf 1984); Brazil, specimens examined in this study. Pacific Ocean—Costa Rica, Golfo Dulce ( Dean 1998).

Remarks. Ancistrosyllis hartmanae of this study have ventral cirri beginning on the third chaetiger, thus differing from those of A. groenlandica , which have ventral cirri beginning on the first chaetiger. The specimens described herein have two lateral antennae and one median antenna, differing from the ones of A. hamata , which lack a median antenna. The position of the first pair of hooks in A. hartmanae (from chaetiger 3) differs from other similar species as A. groenlandica (from chaetigers 3–4), A. hamata (from chaetigers 4–7) and A. jonesi (from chaetiger 7). Ancistrosyllis hartmanae also differ from those three species in having more reduced parapodia. No morphological differences were found between the specimens of this study and the specimens described by Wolf (1984). This is the first record of A. hartmanae for Brazil.
