Type (lectotype designated by Townsend 1985: 25):— U.S.A. Habitat in Virginia, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.24 (LINN [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11650/).

Nomenclatural notes:—The epiteth “ monstruosus ” was choosen by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 256) probably because the structure of the synflorescence as highlighted in the diagnosis [“spica terminali longissima crassissima...densiflora purpurea”]. A citation (“ Amaranthus monstruosus Merat ! in herb.”) was also provided. A specimen at P (barcode 04021951) bears a plant (terminal part) and the label “ Amaranthus monstruosus | Horti Tonelle. Audibert. | 8 7 b. [September] 1830 ”. The morphology of this exsicattum matches with the diagnosis and this specimen is designated here? as the lectotype of the name Amaranthus hypochondriacus var. monstruosus .

Taxonomical notes:—The synflorescence structure of the var. monstruosus matches with those of the typical Am. hypochondriacus (see e.g., Mosyakin & Robertson 2003, Iamonico 2015), so the two names can be synonymyzed.
