Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: from Red Sea, PG, GO to Australia.

Regional records. PG and GO: Iran (present study).

Habitat. Rocky/sandy shores with algae, usually in burrows under rocks and rubble, lower intertidal to at least 3 m deep.

Remarks. Material collected from Qeshm Island by Naderloo et al. (2013) was identified as Alpheus n. sp. 1. We re-examined this material and verified it as A. strenuus . This is the only species of Alpheus in the region whose females bear balaeniceps setae on the minor chela. Alpheus strenuus is a rare species and is one of the largest snapping shrimps in the area (TL up to 8 cm).
