Aclis canaliculata (E.A. Smith, 1890) comb. nov.

Fig. 22 View FIGURE22

Amaurella canaliculata View in CoL E.A. Smith, 1890: 280, pl. 23, Fig. 27.

Type material. Lectotype (herein designated): NHMUK 1889.10 About NHMUK .1.612 . Paralectotypes: Saint Helena: NHMUK 1889.10.1.613–616 [4] .

Type locality. Saint Helena .

Material examined. Saint Helena: ANSP 67898 [1].

Remarks. The current classification of this species in the Microstelma A. Adams, 1863 ( Zebinidae ) ( MolluscaBase 2023c) should be revised. It was originally described in the genus Amaurella A. Adams, 1867 , which was demonstrated by Ponder (1985) to be a junior synonym of Microstelma . Ponder (1985) described the presence of weak to moderate axial ribs that do not extend over the base of the teleoconch whorls in Microstelma , which are lacking in Aclis . The original description, observations on the type series ( Fig. 22A, B View FIGURE22 ) and of one topotype clearly indicate that the species has a completely smooth teleoconch, except for strong incremental scars typical of Eulimidae . Therefore, we propose a new combination of the species in Aclis .

The shell herein designated as the lectotype is the figured specimen by E.A. Smith (1890: pl. 23, Fig. 27) ( Fig. 22A View FIGURE22 ). All shells of the type series are glued to a cardboard ( Fig. 22A, B View FIGURE22 ). The topotype of A. canaliculata comb. nov. from the ANSP ( Fig. 22C, D View FIGURE22 ) contains a label by A. Warén (10 Feb. 2003) indicating that this shell is a type and most probably a syntype . This shell was donated to the ANSP by G.B. Sowerby and there is no evidence that E.A. Smith studied this specimen. Thus , we do not consider the shell of ANSP 67898 About ANSP as a syntype .
