Zebrida adamsii White, 1847 , not Adams, 1847, and Acanthonyx zebrida Wood, 1867 , a junior subjective synonym ( Decapoda : Brachyura : Pilumnidae )

Adams (1847c: 497, 498) commented “The Zebrida , a new genus of Mr. White and myself, was dredged in about six fathoms from the mouth of the Pantai river, on the coast of Borneo. It is a torpid, though elegant little Crustacean, having all the apathetic peculiarities of the Lambrus and Parthenope . The species (Z. Adamsii, White) is of a light pink-colour with dark red-brown longitudinal stripes. It is perfectly smooth, polished, and hairless”. Zebrida adamsii had earlier been described as a new genus and new species by White (1847d: 120, 121; see Clark & Presswell 2001: 163; Ng et al. 2008: 139). The description in Adams (1847c) is not the first and does not cause any nomenclatural problems.

Wood (1867: 215, unnumbered fig.) however, used the name “ Acánthonyx zébrida ” which is “a curious-looking little crab, notable for the hooked extremities of the limbs. The name of Acanthonyx , or Thorn-clawed crab, is given to the genus on account of this structure”. The figure of Wood (1867: 215), however, clearly depicts a specimen of Zebrida adamsii White, 1847 . The spination of the frontal margin corresponds well with the holotype (see Ng & Chia 1999: fig. 1). The way Wood (1867) uses this name means that it should be treated as different from the taxon of Adams (1847c). As Wood (1867) had no specimens of the species, we here select the holotype of Zebrida adamsii White, 1847c , to be the simultaneous neotype of Acanthonyx zebrida Wood, 1867 . This will help stabilise the taxonomy of Zebrida which has three closely related described species ( Ng & Chia 1999). Acanthonyx zebrida Wood, 1867 is therefore here regarded as a junior objective synonym of Zebrida adamsii White, 1847 .
