COMMENT: Revised by Schwartz and Schwartz, 1943, J. Mammal., 24:59-72, and Marshall and Sage, 1981, Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond., 47:15-25. Musser, 1977, Am. Mus . Novit., 2624:12, included castaneus and commissarius from the Philippines in this species. Does not include poschiavinus which Capanna et al., 1977, Boll. Zool., 44:213-246, considered a distinct species. Corbet, 1978:141, included spretus in this species but Pelz and Niethammer, 1978, Z. Saugetierk., 43:302-304, considered spretus a distinct species. Includes molossinus; see Marshall, 1977, Bull. Am. Mus . Nat. Hist., 158(3):21 1; listed as provisionally distinct by Marshall and Sage, 1981, Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond., 47: 17, 24, but recent biochemical evidence suggests that it is conspecific with musculus (JTM) . Includes wagneri; see Marshall and Sage, 1981, Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond., 47:15-25, who listed abbotti , castaneus , domesticus , hortulanus , poschiavinus , and spretus as distinct species; also see comments under poschiavinus and spretus .
