TYPE LOCALITY: Australia, Western Australia, near Derby .

DISTRIBUTION: Australian coast from N. New South Wales through Queensland to N.E. Western Australia.

COMMENT: Includes littoralis ; see Knox, 1978, J. Zool. Lond., 185:276-277. Probably includes australius, callopes, M. cervinipes albiventer , melicus, mixtus, and murinus ; M. lutillus from S. New Guinea and Cape York may prove to be a subspecies of burtoni (CHSW) .
